□ Personality: Upon first meeting Tamaki people tend to write him off as one of two things: a fool, or a prince. He's most certainly both, but there is much more than what the shallow definitions of those labels proscribe to the young Suoh. Underneath it all there's a heart of pure gold which ends up endearing him to those he meets.

He similar to a fool because he's insanely gullible. Not only do the other members of the club (most notably Kaoru and Hikaru) take advantage of this fact, but his own father proscribes one of his favorite hobbies as 'teasing his adorable son, Tamaki'. Teasing Tamaki is like tricking a puppy, all done without serious malicious intent but mostly to see its adorable confusion as it tries to figure out what just happened. The Host Club plays around with Tamaki in this way but when it looks like an outsider is going to take advantage on how easy it is to fool Tamaki, they'll stand in to protect him. I believe that he's so easy to trick and lead on because he believes that people are inherently good. His grandmother despises him due to his mother being a mistress of his father and is rather open in her opinion of this yet still Tamaki doesn't begrudge her. When she comes to the the school festival and rudely proclaims “Don't touch me. Your filthy.” in response to Tamaki attempting to greet her he only assumes he has done something to offend her, like smelling bad because he had been working with food. He tries so very hard to please everyone, making people happy makes Tamaki happy and there's a glow about him when he's able to achieve that. After all, he did establish the Host Club on the principle of being able to bring girls' fantasies to fruition.

Tamaki's enthusiasm is addictive. Once he decides to go for something he tends to go for it at full tilt, barreling ahead without really looking at all the angles. Yet he does so with such a passion he ends up sweeping those around him in as well, whether it be by successfully charming a lady or winning a competition. Maybe if he slowed down and actually looked at how to approach the situation logically (instead of daydreaming about the results or the best method within his princely mannerisms) he'd be able to win more of the 'competitions' or 'games' that come up in efforts for the club members claiming 'dibs' gaining more access to Haruhi. These games are normally played between him and the twins, though the rest of the club have been seen to join in because they all are fascinated with her in some way. An example of this would be when they went to the beach and tried to find out what Haruhi is scared of. After each member attempting something and failing it was finally a thunderstorm later that night that had Tamaki discovering that she was afraid of the noise. Without a moment's hesitation he moves to comfort her through the storm. By then the game is over and he still managed to grow closer to Haruhi in its absence, but that still doesn't stop him from taking up the next change to be competitive.

He's emotional. Tamaki is easily moved, often to the point of tears. We see with this in the storyline that goes through the divide between the nature of Umehito Nekozawa (who cannot stand the light) and his little sister Kirimi (who is afraid of the darkness and cats). When Kirimi rushes into the club room looking for her 'brother' because the portrait of Umehito and the reality of Umehito are so different he swears to help reform the dark-loving boy so he can be what he sister needs and she would no longer have to look for a substitute (which ends up being him). He can also be documented with frequent moping when rejected, intense glee and then back again within the space of a few seconds. It's not surprising to see Tamaki condemning himself to the corner when someone's rejected him, nor it is uncommon to see him bouncing back the next moment in a flourish of grandiose speech (with the amount that he talks, it's quite clear he loves the sound of his own voice) and gesturing. All of this just shows how passionate and true to himself he is all the time. Tamaki doesn't hold himself back around others, he enjoys who he is and allows this to be put on display even if it does end up with some amount of ridicule.

There would be good reason for Tamaki to be less bright than he is. He's the son of the Chairman of Ouran Academy but he is still not recognized formally by his family because he's a bastard child. His father married young and he ended up having an affair with the daughter of a French aristocrat which produced Tamaki. He was raised in France with his mother until he was fourteen, during those years his mother's family incurred a massive debt. His mother is prone to illness and would have perished without the proper funds for medical support and knowing this his grandmother on his father's side struck a deal with Tamaki. The deal was that he had to come to live in Japan and train to become the heir of the family- only then would the Suoh's give their financial backing to his mother. The catch was that he had to promise never to see her again. Wanting nothing more for his mother to stay well, he agreed. And at this point in the manga where he is taken from, he does not know where she is at all. He does not let that keep him down at all and merely hopes that she's safe and well where-ever she is. This demonstrates the selfless aspect of Tamaki's nature.

In fact, along with being selfless Tamaki can be surprisingly wise about his friends and acquaintances while being incredibly, mind-numbingly dense about himself. He pulled in all the members of the Host Club knowing that they could benefit from it. He also can break up terrible fights and speak to what really is in other's hearts when the moment arises that it's needed. In those moments, his expression is softer, open and honest and it makes one want to be a better person.

… of course this is almost always followed by him doing a complete 180 and falling into his more shallow, princely routine. However that doesn't mean what he says in those moments are meant any less. Tamaki isn't perfect, though he might seem something close from the distance. His fascination with commoner's is an endless source of headaches for Haruhi and he tends to assume that commoners have little in common with people that are privileged to the degree that those in Ouran are. In the beginning when he first meets Haruhi, he does talk down to her. It's his exposure to her and the slow widening of his world perspective that this aspect of Tamaki is worked upon.

The moment that really sums up who he is straight from the source himself is a moment during the school festival dance. When Haruhi offers Tamaki a bite of the food she's sampling those guests around him look on and down at such a 'low-brow' gesture. Tamaki erases all doubt from his mind that he cares about their over-critical judgments. He eats the food, smiles, rests his hands on her shoulders before telling her: “I'm me before I'm a Suoh. And I'm proud of that fact.” Tamaki is Tamaki, loud, over-the-top, gullible, naïve and loveable. One of a kind.

□ Appearance: If one wanted to imagine what a prince should look like,Tamaki would be a good model to work from. While he is of mixed ethnicity (French and Japanese) Tamaki's European looks show up themost. He's tall, just around six feet even and has a lithe, youthful build that's in-shape but not overly toned. His hair is a fair blond which is kept short but with bangs long enough to fall around eyes a clear and eye catching violet-blue. His features are that classical type of handsome that works into his king role within the Host Club. When out of the Ouran High School uniform Tamaki tends towards outfits that are casual and comfortable but high-end in quality.

[It had been the most marvelous of evenings in Tamaki's mind. First! They had obtained a simple but heartfelt meal of ramen bowls as large as their heads and at a price that seemed inconceivable for the amount of food that they had. It was one of those 'holes-in-the-wall' establishments, though our admirable Host King did note that there was not a single hole in the whole building and it was rather clean. He was expecting to have to climb, to traverse a secret passageway which at the end held some tucked away shack in which a haggard but joyful family poured their love into every noodle!! Not wanting to betray this precious underground commoner knowledge, Tamaki had kept a serious, determined expression and purpose as he followed her to what ended up being a obvious restaurant in the middle of a shopping district.

...still, the food had been wonderful.

And so had 'window shopping', which was something Tamaki was coming to enjoy during these- ah, they were dates, weren't they? True dates shared by this...blooming romance. It was novel, though a test of wills! There were just so many things that caught his attention and seemed like a great deal and he was not to buy them! Thus, there was frequent pulling and a frequent kingly face pressed against the windows as they made their way around.

Then, Thirdly! A movie in a commoner cinema, surrounded by so many others and sharing the same experience. They had seen an American film, one with unbridled action and adventure, explosions everywhere! His spirit was deeply moved, pushed towards soaring by the thrilling conclusion. They emerged into the clear, crisp night and headed back to the Fujioka residence hand-in-hand.

He was happy and he didn't want the night to end.

Outside of Haruhi's door they shared a good-night kiss. It was...lately that kissing Haruhi had come to hold more than it did before. He never wanted to stop before but now he never wanted to stop. He wanted to keep kissing his lovely Haruhi and...and...]

Haruhi... [A soft murmur as they parted. Tamaki squeezed her hands in his own, unable to fight down the light blush that kept staining his cheeks in moments like these.] Maybe I could come in for a little while?

[While the hour was a bit late, it wasn't unreasonable! And if he remembered correctly Haruhi had said her father was out of town this particular weekend, so it was not like he would be intruding on precious family time.

Not that he was planning anything nefarious while Haruhi's father was away! They were just thoughts! That was all!

But...he would not mind another kiss...or two. (Or three. Or four.) How could he help himself from the treasure of Haruhi's affections?]
